1. Bold New Ideas Guide Released

The 2009 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work was released on August 12th, 2009. This informative and easy-to-use reference features the 260 winners of the 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility (part of Families and Work Institute’s When Work Works www.whenworkworks.org project funded by the Sloan Foundation)—including several CLC companies.

The Guide highlights many of the most creative workplace programs and practices in the country, serving as a go-to resource for:

• employers looking for promising practices;
• job-seekers looking for great workplaces; and
• journalists looking for information on cutting-edge employer practices.

It details innovative approaches for creating effective and flexible workplaces that benefit employees while also helping employers achieve business results, address organizational opportunities and challenges, and respond to an uncertain economy.

3. Ellen Galinsky, FWI President, Begins 20 City Radio Tour

Ellen Galinsky, President of Families and Work Institute, began a radio tour on August 12th featuring the 2009 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work in 20 cities around the country and highlighting local examples of Sloan Award winners.

4. Launch of FWI’s Blog and YouTube Channel

This summer, FWI launched its new blog, located at http://familiesandwork.org/blog. At the June 15th Work Life Legacy Awards dinner, we had the opportunity to ask a number of the leaders in the field of work life, “What is your one wish for the future of work life?” You can listen to highlights from their thought-provoking answers. And we are curious to hear from you. What is your wish? How can we achieve a better fit for life off and on the job? Behavioral Economics and Financial Preparedness in the Workplace
Professor Eldar Shafir of Princeton University discussed research on human decision making, including the psychology of financial behavior—both his and that of his colleagues in the field of behavioral economics. This research helps us think about how we are managing our own finances during the recession. It is also highly relevant for those who have or are developing initiatives for employees on financial literacy and preparedness. (March 25, 2009)

The Retention and Advancement of Women in the New Global Economy

In honor of International Women's Day Families and Work Institute’s President, Ellen Galinsky, moderated a Webcast hosted by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. With numerous studies showing that companies with greater gender diversity often achieve higher returns, the continued investment in women’s advancement and retention programs is important to long-term sustainability in today’s challenged global marketplace. 8. CLC Company Workplaces Can Apply for the 2010 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility Beginning December 2009

We encourage individual Corporate Leadership Circle workplaces to apply for the next round of awards, either within the 30 communities nation-wide which are a part of the When Work Works program or as part of the “At-Large” category, through which any employer in the U.S. can apply. Employers that apply for the Sloan Awards receive a customized benchmarking report comparing their organization to what employers are doing nationally and to Sloan Award winners and applicants. (Application information for the 2010 Awards will be available on the When Work Works Web site www.whenworkworks.org in December.)

Top Leadership from the Obama (September 16, 2008) and McCain (September 24, 2008) teams presented their approach to work life and answered employee and employer questions submitted to FWI on work place and force issues.
