Update 11/11/05
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO USERS OF THE NATIONAL STUDY OF THE CHANGING WORKFORCE (NSCW) PUBLIC-USE FILES REGARDING DATA FILE ERRORS
We have found very few errors in the current version of the 1992, 1997, and 2002 National Study of the Changing Workforce (NSCW) public-use data files published in 2004, and none have (yet) been brought to our attention by researchers at other organizations. Although the several errors described in the attachment might present problems for some users, most would not, and all can be identified by careful scrutiny of analytic results – which is how we uncovered them. If, however, any user of the NSCW public-use files identifies what they think might be an error, we strongly urge them to let us know by sending an email to the following address: nscw@familiesandwork.org. We apologize for any inconvenience the errors described in the attachment may have caused.
In addition to errors in the data files, we also discovered that information was inadvertently omitted from the file providing overall guidance to use of the NSCW public-use files – GUIDE OVERALL.RTF – that is included in the CD-ROM. Specifically, important technical information regarding the 2002 NSCW survey was left out.
Both a corrected version of GUIDE OVERALL.RTF (NSCW CORRECTED GUIDE OVERALL.RTF) and code to correct data files (NSCW ERRATA 1.DOC) are attached. We strongly urge users to replace the original version of GUIDE OVERALL.RTF with the version included here and to print it out for reference purposes.
We also urge users to modify their data files using the attached SPSS variable transformation code in NSCW ERRATA 1.DOC – or its equivalent in their statistical software.
Update 06/01/04 - 2002, 1997 and 1992 Data—Version 1.0
Public-use data files from the 2002 National Study of the Changing Workforce (NSCW) are now available on CD-ROM. A list of variables with short labels can be downloaded at no charge. Free download here.
The CD-ROM Version 1.0 contains 1992, 1997 and 2002 NSCW data in SPSS portable file format plus technical information and general guidance to their use, complete questionnaires (annotated), and fully annotated SPSS syntax/command files used to construct analytic variables and working files. The CD-ROM also contains cross-year comparison files – 2002 vs. 1997, 2002 vs. 1992, 1997 vs. 1992 – including comparable variables for wage and salaried employees. Although we are not able to disseminate 1977 Quality of Employment Survey (QES) data, we have included syntax/command files that can be used to create 2002 vs. 1977 and 1997 vs. 1977 comparison files from raw 1977 QES data.
Pricing of 1992, 1997 and 2002 Public-Use Files:
Individuals: $300
(Faculty may share their individual copies of the public-use files with students in their classes and advisees.)
Institutions: $550
(Government agencies, non-academic non-profits, and for-profit organizations are expected to pay the institutional price. In addition, colleges and universities that place the files on institutional servers and make them available to whole departments or the entire institution are expected to pay the institutional price.)
FWI publications presenting the results of basic analyses of NSCW data can be purchased separately from the FWI website, and select executive summaries can be downloaded at no charge. We recommend comparing results of your preliminary analyses with published results for confirmation before proceeding with your own data analysis plans.
If you have any questions regarding the purchase of public-use files or publications, do not hesitate to call or email Marline Lambert, coordinator of publications at 212-465-2044 / mlambert@familiesandwork.org.
Update as of 10/10/02
1992 Public-Use File Erratum: Codes of "3" on i25, i26, i30, i35, and i40 represent "Neither/Nor" while codes of "4" represent "Disagree" and codes of "5" represent "Strongly Disagree." In general, as indicated in the codebook, we set "neither/nor" responses ("3") to "-4" (missing), "disagree" responses to "3" and "strongly disagree" responses to "4" in the 1992 public-use file, but we did NOT do so for these variables. Corrections will be made in the next version of the public-use files.
Updates since release of Version 2
(Note: Version 2 is the most recent release of the NSCW Public-Use data files. Recent releases are designed to replace previous releases. Therefore, PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING VERSION 2, NOT VERSION 1.)
