Free Web-Based Curriculum and Tips Help Educators and Parents Talk with Children About 9/11 as We Approach the 5th Anniversary

NEW YORK, NY– On the fifth anniversary of September 11th, Families and Work Institute offers a unique, free, Web-based curriculum for educators and parents to help children remember and mark this historical event.

Four years ago, Bank One (now JPMorgan Chase) and Families and Work Institute recognized the need and void in the tools available for educators and parents to help children commemorate the anniversary of 9/11. With a grant from the Bank One Foundation, Families and Work Institute directed the development of multi-dimensional lesson plans with resources for parents and educators to help children recognize and understand the events of that tragic day.

The curriculum and supporting materials were developed with an expert advisory board of educational professionals, nonprofit leaders, teachers and child psychologists. The result was 9/11 As History, a free Web-based curriculum for children grades K-12.

The lesson plans, which are all tied to National Educational Standards, offer a range of options of age-appropriate lesson plans that an educator may use in his or her classroom. In addition, the 9/11 As History resources include a broad array of tips for educators and parents.

“Five years later, this curriculum continues to be used and endorsed by educators throughout the nation. Students whose teachers have used the curriculum have sent in art work and writings on their reflections of the events of September 11th. These insightful and compelling works of art are also available in a book entitled Looking Back, Moving Forward,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute.

Lois Backon, project director of 9/11 As History and vice president of Families and Work Institute added, “9/11 continues to touch so many children’s lives, helping them reflect about an event that lives on in our hearts and minds.”

The 9/11 As History curriculum includes:

  • Free Web-based, K-12, age-appropriate lesson plans and activities about:
    • safety and fear;
    • reflective processing and resilience; and
    • understanding current events and media awareness.
  • Tips for parents and educators on:
    • preparing yourself for the anniversary of 9/11;
    • how to talk with children about 9/11; and
    • how to interpret normal reaction to media and traumatic events.
  • Additional resources for parents and educators

Families and Work Institute encourages both parents and educators to download the 9/11 As History curriculum for free at www.911ashistory.org.
