Research highlights from Working Mother Congress 2009
On December 15th, FWI hosted an “encore” of the research panel “New Results/Next Steps” convened for the 2009 Working Mother WorkLife Congress. The panel gives an excellent perspective on why flexible work options are so important to companies and employees. You can download the presentation here, or listen to a podcast of the call.

Relaunching your career: notes from the iRelaunch Forum
On October 29th, I represented the Families and Work Institute at the Career Relaunch Forum at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. I am a relauncher myself, having returned to work after a 14 year hiatus raising my children and organizing community programs, so the Forum was of particular interest to me. I wish these [...]
Live blogging the Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation
Maria Shriver, working with the Center for American Progress, release the Shriver Report, subtitled, “A Woman’s Nation.” I participated in a conference call with Shriver and John Podesta, head of the Center for American Progress.
The report stems from the finding that women are now, as Gloria Steinem put it, “Now that women are half of [...]

Ellen on CBS Evening News tonight (10/16)
I have been interviewed for a piece that will air tonight on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (Friday, October 16th from 6:30 to 7:00 PM, pending breaking news.) This is a guest post from Sharon Meers, co-author of Getting to 50-50. Visit Sharon’s blog here.
On NPR this week, I was asked if there’s any good in the new statistics showing that women now outnumber men in the work force. Maybe. If it lets us embrace women as breadwinners, I said, that would [...]

The report presents findings by wage level and gender and finds that effective workplaces contribute to positive health, but the overall trend in health of employed American workers is going downward in a number of important areas. Bloggers [...]

Wellness: It’s everyone’s responsibility
Cross posted from the Huffington Post:
No matter what your position is on the health care debate, almost everyone seems to agree that the path we are on is an untenable route to increasing costs and diminishing returns. New data show American workers are getting less healthy each year, and this obviously will increase health care [...]

It’s National Work and Family Month
Well, starting October 1 it is!
This year, employees are encouraged to strike a balance by talking to their managers about a flexible work arrangement. Use October as a time to try telework, condense a workweek, join a wellness program or organize a workplace volunteer activity.

Lisa Leslie, the most famous star in the WNBA, is retiring. The headline in Tuesday’s New York Times piece notes that at 37, Leslie “decided to retire after playing this season, saying it was difficult to balance being an athlete, wife and mother.”
