When Work Works

At Large Applications

Any U.S. employer can now apply as an at-large applicant for the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility!  The deadline for applications is May 1, 2009.

For the past four years, the national When Work Works program has been recognizing employers across the country for their creation of 21st century workplaces. Through the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, hundreds of companies have been recognized for using flexible workplace practices as strategies to increase workplace effectiveness and yield positive business results, and to help employees succeed at work and at home.

In past years, the Sloan Awards were open only to employers in selected When Work Works communities.  However, this year, When Work Works is pleased to introduce an “At Large” category. Through the at-large application process, any organization in the U.S. can now apply for the prestigious award before the May 1, 2009 deadline for at-large applicants. The award is worksite based, so organizations with more than one location may apply for just one or for several worksite locations. The online application is fast and easy to complete.  A copy of the employer questionnaire can be downloaded here and the on-line application can be completed here.

Using a rigorous scoring methodology, the Sloan Awards honor organizations of all sizes and all types that are using workplace flexibility as a strategy to increase workplace effectiveness and yield positive business results, and to help employees succeed at work and at home.  Any organization that applies for the award will receive a complimentary benchmarking report comparing their organization to what employers are doing across the country and to Sloan Award winners and applicants, as well as a complimentary copy of the initiative’s Bold Ideas Guide, a compendium of best practices. Award winners will receive local and national recognition, including mention in the national media.

When Work Works is a nationwide initiative to bring research on workplace effectiveness and flexibility into community and business practice. It is a project of Families and Work Institute sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in partnership with Institute for a Competitive Workforce, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Twiga Foundation. In 2008, the When Works Works initiative drew from employers in its 30 partnering communities and received 527 applications. This year, three new  partner communities have joined --the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Columbus, Ohio – and the effort has gone statewide in Arizona, Michigan and Kentucky.
